Do shrimp necessarily need a filter and a heater?

The Filter: Yes, but...

A filter is important to keep the water clear and break down pollutants (such as ammonium/ammonia).

Important: The filter must be "shrimp-safe"! Conventional internal filters often have intake slits that are large enough to suck in curious baby shrimp. A sponge filter (air-driven) or a filter secured with a fine mesh is mandatory.

The Heater: Mostly No

Most dwarf shrimp (especially Neocaridina) feel most comfortable at room temperature (18°C to 24°C).

- Advantage without heating: Cooler keeping temperatures increase the lifespan of the animals, as their metabolism runs slower.

- When is heating necessary? Only if the room cools down very much in winter (below 15°C) or if you keep special high-bred species that require a constant 24°C.
