Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) is the absolute classic among aquarium mosses and an indispensable part of modern aquaristics. It is extremely adaptable, grows under almost all conditions and forms dense, lush green moss carpets over time. It is particularly essential in shrimp aquariums and breeding tanks, as the fine branches offer optimal protection for young animals and a rich grazing area for microorganisms. Java moss can be perfectly tied or glued to roots or stones and gives every aquascape a beautiful, natural look.

Your advantages at a glance:

  • Extremely easy to care for & robust: Ideal for beginners and professionals alike.

  • Perfect retreat: Offers shrimp offspring and young fish protection from predators.

  • Optimal grazing area: Microorganisms settle in the moss – the perfect first food for dwarf shrimp.

  • Versatile: Can be tied, glued or used as a ground cover.

  • Low requirements: Grows reliably even with little light and without additional CO2 fertilization.

Application & Care

  • Light requirements: Low to medium

  • Optimal temperature: 12 to 30 °C

  • Water values: Very tolerant (pH value: 5.0 – 8.0 / total hardness: soft to hard)

  • Growth: Medium

  • Placement: Foreground, midground (fixed on hardscape such as roots or stones)

Application note: Simply fix the Java moss with a suitable aquarium glue (superglue based on cyanoacrylate) or a classic moss string to the desired root or stone. After a short acclimatization phase, the moss will grow firmly by itself. To promote compact and dense growth, the moss can be regularly trimmed with spring scissors.
